Point & Figure

X and O charting system ignoring time and emphasizing reversals

IndicatorChartingReversalPatterns

Overview

Point & Figure charting is a 150+ year old price-only charting system using X's (representing bull moves) and O's (representing bear moves) stacked vertically. Time is completely ignored; only significant price movements (configured box size) matter. This creates a highly compressed view of price trends and reversals, revealing classic chart patterns like support/resistance, consolidations, and breakout points without time bias. Point & Figure cuts through sideways noise, making trends crystal clear.

When price moves up by the box size, an X is added; when down, price switches columns and O's are stacked. The resulting chart shows distinct columns of X's and O's representing uptrends and downtrends. Horizontal alignment reveals support/resistance; vertical stacking shows trend strength. Reversal signals occur when a column switches from X to O or vice versa, indicating trend exhaustion.

Used by professional traders for identifying major trend changes, support/resistance, and chart patterns without time distortion. Excellent for swing trading on stocks/commodities. Combines strengths of trend following (clear reversals) with support/resistance identification (precise levels).

Formula

X Column (Uptrend): Add X when Close > Last X price + Box Size
O Column (Downtrend): Add O when Close < Last O price - Box Size
Column Reversal: Switch to O column when price falls Reversal boxes below current X column
Column Reversal: Switch to X column when price rises Reversal boxes above current O column
Box Size = User-defined price increment (1, 5, 10 points, or %)
Point & Figure distills price into simple up/down columns, revealing trend structure without time contamination.

Common Use Cases

1. Trend Reversal Detection

Column switches (X to O or O to X) signal trend reversals. Clear, unambiguous reversal signals without time noise.

2. Pattern Recognition

Point & Figure shows classic chart patterns: double tops, double bottoms, consolidation trapezoids, and breakouts very clearly.

3. Support & Resistance

Horizontal lines of X's and O's reveal price levels where reversals repeatedly occur. Highly accurate S/R zones.

4. Swing Trading Setup

Identify breakouts from P&F consolidations on higher timeframes; enter on breakout, stop at support. Tight risk/reward.

Advantages & Limitations

Advantages

  • Time-Independent Trends: Removes time bias; trends continue until reversal, regardless of duration.
  • Noise Elimination: Small moves are ignored; only significant moves matter. Cleaner trend picture.
  • Clear Patterns: Consolidation/breakout patterns are visually apparent; very intuitive once learned.
  • Works on Long Timeframes: Excellent for weekly/monthly swing trading; compresses years of data into readable chart.

! Limitations

  • Learning Curve: Non-intuitive for candlestick-trained traders; requires time to master pattern recognition.
  • Box Size Sensitivity: Different box sizes = different patterns. Requires calibration for each instrument.
  • Limited Platform Support: Not available on most retail charting platforms; requires specialized P&F software.
  • Backward-Looking: Pattern completion often means trend already months old; entry timing must use other tools.

Tips & Best Practices

⚙️ Calibrate Box Size

Use ATR or volatility to size boxes. Stocks: 1-5 points; crypto: 0.5-2% of price. Too large = trend missed; too small = noise.

📊 Use High/Low Method

Plot both high/low P&F charts; intrabar reversals (high shows X, close shows O) indicate indecision/weakness.

🎯 Combine with Candlesticks

Use P&F for trend direction and key levels; use candlesticks for exact entry/exit timing and volume confirmation.

⚠️ Ignore Current Column

Column switches often occur at candle close. Don't trade on partial columns; wait for confirmed reversal bar on candlesticks.

Example Strategy

1. Setup: Weekly P&F Chart

Plot weekly P&F with 5-point boxes (stocks) or 0.5% boxes (crypto). Identify current trend (X column = up, O = down).

2. Signal: Column Switch or Breakout from Consolidation

Wait for X column to switch downward to O (reversal) or X column to break above prior X column tops (new breakout).

3. Entry: Daily Chart Confirmation

Enter on daily candlestick breakout above prior daily high with volume. Stop below prior P&F column low.

4. Target: Next P&F Support or Pattern Target

Exit at next horizontal support level in P&F or measured move target from pattern. Trail stop above weekly reversal point.
