TD Trendline
DeMark trend direction confirmation lines
Overview
TD Trendline is a DeMark methodology drawing trendlines based on specific price action patterns rather than connecting arbitrary swing highs/lows. In uptrends, draw line through 2 consecutive lowest closes within 4-bar window; line serves as support. In downtrends, draw through 2 highest closes within 4-bar window for resistance. These mechanical trendlines adapt dynamically and break frequently = reliable trend reversal signals.
Unlike traditional trendlines which are subjective, TD Trendlines follow precise rules for drawing and validation. Break of trendline = trend reversal with high probability. Trendlines recalculate constantly as new bars update the 4-bar window, making them responsive to real market structure changes. Professional traders combine TD Trendlines with sequential patterns for complete directional confirmation.
Works on all timeframes. Best for identifying exact trendline breaks and reversals. Combined with TD Pressure and DeMark Sequential = complete exhaustion+trend system from a single analysis framework.
Formula
Parameters
| Parameter | Type | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lookback Period | Integer | 4 bars | Window to find consecutive closes for trendline |
| Display Breaks | Boolean | True | Highlight trendline break points on chart |
| Show Historical TLs | Boolean | True | Display prior trendlines for reference |
Common Use Cases
1. Trend Break Signals
Trendline break = mechanical reversal signal. No ambiguity; clear price action rule for when trend is broken.
2. Entry/Exit Levels
Enter counter-trend when trendline breaks. Exit trend-following trades at trendline retest. Exact price levels.
3. Support/Resistance
TD Trendlines act as dynamic support (uptrends) or resistance (downtrends). Price respects TL much like swing-high/low.
4. Pattern Confluence
TD TL break + Sequential count completion + Pressure reset = triple confirmation of reversal. Maximum edge.
Advantages & Limitations
✓ Advantages
- Objective Rules: Mechanical trendline drawing; no subjectivity or interpretation bias.
- Dynamic Adaptation: Recalculates every bar; responsive to current price structure.
- Combined Framework: Works with TD Sequential/Pressure/Countdown for complete system.
- All Timeframes: Same rules work on all charts; fractal consistency proven.
! Limitations
- Frequent Changes: 4-bar window means TL recalculates often; whipsaws in choppy markets.
- Consolidation Whipsaws: Many false breaks during range-bound consolidations.
- Late Entry Signals: TL break signal = after break has started; entry often suboptimal timing.
- Not Volume-Aware: Ignores volume; breaks without volume often reverse quickly.
Tips & Best Practices
⚡ Filter with Volume
TL break only valid with above-average volume. Low-volume breaks = false signals; ignore without confirmation.
📊 Layer with Pressure
TL break + Pressure reset = mechanical confirmation. Both indicate reversal; confluence = high edge.
🎯 Wait for Close
Don't trade on wick break. Wait for trendline break candle to close; only then is reversal confirmed.
⚠️ Use Trending Markets
TL signals work best in trending markets. Skip ranges/consolidations; too many whipsaws. Use ADX filter.
Example Strategy
1. Setup: TD Trendline + Pressure
Plot daily chart with TD Trendlines drawn automatically. Monitor bullish/bearish TD Pressure counts daily.
2. Signal: TD TL Break + Pressure Reset
When daily TD Trendline breaks AND bullish pressure resets, high-probability reversal setup = short signal.
3. Entry: 4-hour Breakdown + Volume
On 4-hour break below TL with above-average volume. Stop = above TL. Confirm with close below TL on 4-hour.
4. Target: Prior Support or TL Retest
Exit at prior swing low or when TL is retested (reforming). Trail stops below new TL as trend continues.
