Laguerre RSI Node

Polynomial-Filtered RSI

IndicatorMomentumOscillator

Overview

Laguerre RSI applies Laguerre polynomial filtering to RSI values, creating an ultra-smooth momentum oscillator that nearly eliminates whipsaws while remaining responsive to real reversals. Laguerre functions are orthogonal polynomials that weight recent data more heavily while filtering older data, making trending data pass through cleanly while chop gets smoothed away. Result: RSI that rarely whips but catches every real momentum shift.

Using advanced mathematical filters vs simple moving averages creates unprecedented smoothness. Laguerre RSI can stay in overbought for weeks if trend continues (unlike standard RSI which oscillates), providing confidence in trend following with fewer false signals. Perfect for traders tired of RSI whipsaws and looking for pure trend signals.

Formula

Laguerre RSI filters RSI through polynomial basis functions:

1. Calculate RSI
RSI = 100 * (Average Gains / (Average Gains + Average Losses))
Standard 14-period RSI calculation
2. Apply Laguerre Polynomial Filter
L[i] = gamma*RSI[i] + (1-gamma)*L[i-1]
Recursive Laguerre filtering with gamma coefficient
3. Output Laguerre RSI
Laguerre_RSI = L[i] (smoothed RSI via polynomial)
Ultra-smooth RSI values without lag
Interpretation
Above 70: Overbought but trend support through smoothing
Below 30: Oversold but bounce confirmed by filter
Stays in extreme long = strong consistent trend
Quick returns to midline = trend weakness/reversal
Smoother than RSI, crossovers more reliable

💡 Tip: Gamma 0.3 - most aggressive filtering, smoothest but slower. Gamma 0.5 - balanced, standard. Gamma 0.7 - more responsive but keeps some RSI chop. Test on your timeframe: slower TF needs lower gamma, faster TF needs higher.

Common Use Cases

1. Whipsaw Elimination

Standard RSI bounces 30/70 constantly in choppy markets. Laguerre RSI stays in extremes through chop, only returning when trend truly reverses. Hold profitable trades longer without false exits from overbought/oversold bounces.

2. Trend Strength Confirmation

Laguerre RSI staying at 80+ for 5+ bars = extremely strong trend. Will continue sideways or down if it drops below 70. Dropping from 80 to 50 in one bar = warning of decay, reversal possible next 2-3 bars. Smooth turning points.

3. Divergence Trading

Price new high, Laguerre RSI doesn't = clear divergence due to smoothing. False breakouts show immediately. Price at low, Laguerre RSI oversold = likely bounce. No "false divergences" from noise like standard RSI produces.

4. Momentum Building Detection

Laguerre RSI smoothly rising from 30 toward 50 = momentum building through consolidation. Price still range, but filter shows buyers establishing. Predictor of breakout coming before price confirms. Early trend setup detection.

Advantages & Limitations

Advantages

  • Eliminates RSI whipsaws
  • Stays in overbought/oversold through trends
  • Clean divergence signals
  • Advanced mathematical filtering
  • Keeps responsiveness despite smoothness
!

Limitations

  • Complex calculation (Laguerre functions)
  • Less intuitive than standard RSI
  • Gamma parameter needs tuning
  • Can lag during sharp reversals
  • Limited compatibility with some platforms

Tips & Best Practices

💡 Use Extreme Holdings

Only exit when Laguerre RSI returns from extreme, not on reaching extreme. This is the whole point - hold through extremes, exit smoothly on return. Different mindset from standard RSI but much more profitable.

📊 Monitor Divergences Only

Overbought/oversold levels less reliable. Focus on divergences instead: price new extreme, Laguerre RSI doesn't = very strong signal. This is where the indicator shines over standard RSI.

⚡ Test Gamma Setting

Default 0.5 works for daily charts. For intraday, try 0.6-0.7 for responsiveness. For weekly/monthly, try 0.3-0.4 for maximum smoothing. Backtest reveals optimal gamma for your trading style.

⚠️ Requires Price Confirmation

Smoothing can hide sharp reversals temporarily. Always confirm Laguerre RSI signals with price action, support/resistance, or other momentum indicators. Don't trade alone based on Laguerre RSI.

Example Strategy

Laguerre RSI trend-holding strategy:

Laguerre RSI Trend Hold Trade

1Setup Phase

  • Laguerre RSI climbs above 70 (overbought)
  • But price trend still strong higher
  • Normal RSI would oscillate, Laguerre stays

2Entry Signal

  • Breakout above resistance with Laguerre above 70
  • Enter long expecting hold in extreme
  • Ignore standard RSI overbought warnings

3Exit Condition

  • Laguerre RSI drops below 70 from above (turning down)
  • Price weakness confirmed with lower lows
  • Or take profits at 5-10% move up

4Risk Rules

  • Stop below breakout low (structure failure)
  • HOLD through temporary pullbacks while Laguerre stays above 60
  • Risk 1.5-2% per trade, larger size for strong trends
