Force Index Node

Raw, Exponential & Smoothed Force

IndicatorVolumeMomentum

Overview

Force Index measures the power of buying and selling volume by combining price change with volume. When price increases on high volume, the Force Index is positive and strong. When price decreases on high volume, the Force Index is negative and strong. Force Index reveals how much "oomph" is behind price moves.

Force Index is excellent for identifying buying/selling exhaustion, confirming breakouts, and detecting divergences. It combines the absolute price change with volume for a comprehensive momentum picture.

Formula

Force Index is calculated using raw price change multiplied by volume, typically smoothed with EMA:

Raw Force Index
Raw FI = (Close - Previous Close) × Volume
Smoothed Force Index (EMA)
FI = EMA(Raw FI, Period)
Interpretation
Positive = Bullish force (buying pressure)
Negative = Bearish force (selling pressure)

Unlike normalized indicators, Force Index values depend on the price and volume levels of the security. Each security has its own range, making comparison between securities difficult but making interpretation within a security very clear.

Parameters

ParameterTypeDefaultDescription
periodNumber13The EMA smoothing period for Force Index. Standard is 13 bars.
sourceNodeAutoThe data source node providing OHLCV data. Automatically detected.

Common Use Cases

1. Breakout Confirmation

Strong breakouts have rising Force Index (increasing buying pressure). Weak breakouts fail to achieve positive Force Index, indicating low institutional support.

2. Momentum Divergence

When price reaches new highs but Force Index fails to (bearish), it signals sell exhaustion and reversal. Rising Force Index on declining price (bullish) signals buying support.

3. Trend Strength Assessment

Force Index above zero with positive trend = strong trend. Force Index falling toward zero despite price rising = weakening trend and potential reversal.

4. Exhaustion Detection

Extreme positive Force Index (buying exhaustion) followed by reversal suggests sellers taking control. Use peaks in Force Index as potential exit signals.

Advantages & Limitations

Advantages

  • Combines price change and volume in single metric
  • Excellent divergence indicator with high accuracy
  • Clear positive/negative values show direction and intensity
  • Great for momentum exhaustion detection
  • Adapts to security's natural range
!

Limitations

  • Not normalized - difficult to compare across securities
  • Heavily affected by gap openings and corporate actions
  • Less effective in low-volume stocks
  • Can stay at extremes during strong trending moves
  • Requires price action confirmation for trading signals

Tips & Best Practices

💡 Compare Against Average

Track the average Force Index value for the security over time. Peaks significantly above average are likely to reverse.

📊 Use Zero Line Crossovers

Force Index crossing above zero = bullish signal. Crossing below zero = bearish signal. Use these crossovers for directional confirmation.

⚡ Multi-Timeframe Confirmation

Check Force Index on higher timeframes. Alignment with bigger Force Index signals provides stronger confirmation for smaller timeframe entries.

⚠️ Watch for Gaps

Gap openings create misleading Force Index signals. Give Force Index a few bars after gap to establish reliable momentum readings.

Example Strategy: Force Index Divergence Short

FI Bearish Divergence Short

Divergence Setup

  • ✓ Price makes higher high (new peak)
  • ✓ Force Index fails to make higher high (below previous peak)
  • ✓ Force Index is still positive but declining

Entry Signal

  • → Force Index crosses below zero line
  • → OR price closes below recent swing low

Stop Loss

  • Above the divergence high by 1 ATR, or
  • Above Force Index confirmation area above zero

Profit Target

  • 1st: 1:1 risk to reward
  • 2nd: Support below entry or Force Index reaching extreme negative
  • Trail stop below recent resistance
