Volume Weighted Average Price

IndicatorVolumePrice Action

Overview

Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) is a trading tool that shows the average price weighted by volume traded at each price level. VWAP is calculated from the open of the trading session and resets daily, making it ideal for intraday traders. It represents the true average price that the majority of volume was traded at.

Institutional traders frequently use VWAP because it shows the true average price they would pay when executing large orders. Price above VWAP indicates bullish sentiment (buying at premium prices), while price below VWAP indicates bearish sentiment.

Formula

VWAP accumulates price and volume from the daily open and is calculated as a cumulative average:

1. Typical Price
TP = (High + Low + Close) / 3
2. Cumulative TP × Volume
Cumulative = Sum(TP × Volume)
3. Cumulative Volume
Cumulative Volume = Sum(All Volumes)
4. VWAP (Final)
VWAP = Cumulative (TP × Volume) / Cumulative Volume

VWAP is a running total from the market open. It resets at the start of each trading session. Intraday, as more volume is transacted, VWAP continuously updates, showing the weighted average price for the entire session.

Parameters

ParameterTypeDefaultDescription
offsetNumber0Number of standard deviations to offset bands above/below VWAP (optional, for VWAP bands).
sourceNodeAutoThe data source node providing OHLCV data. Automatically detected from connected nodes.

💡 Important: VWAP resets daily at market open. For multi-day VWAP tracking, use VWAP with market session tracking enabled, or calculate cumulative volume-weighted price over custom periods.

Common Use Cases

1. Institutional Order Execution

VWAP is the primary reference point for institutional traders. When large blocks execute near VWAP, they're getting a fair price relative to market volume. This makes VWAP levels strong support/resistance.

2. Intraday Trading Direction

When price is above VWAP, the trend is bullish (smart money bought at lower prices). When price is below VWAP, the trend is bearish (smart money distributed at higher prices). Use VWAP as your primary directional filter.

3. Entry and Exit Levels

In uptrends, enter on pullbacks to VWAP (support). In downtrends, short rallies to VWAP (resistance). VWAP acts as both a trend filter and a precise entry/exit reference point.

4. Session Strength Identification

If VWAP rises steadily throughout the session, it indicates sustained buying pressure. If VWAP moves sideways or falls, it indicates weak or selling pressure. Use VWAP slope to gauge session strength.

Advantages & Limitations

Advantages

  • Reflects true average price institutional traders target
  • Excellent intraday swing support/resistance levels
  • No parameters needed - completely objective calculation
  • Very reliable across all intraday timeframes
  • Clear directional bias above/below VWAP
!

Limitations

  • Resets daily - loses historical context overnight
  • Primarily useful for intraday, less effective on daily+ charts
  • Gap openings can cause initial VWAP to be distant from open
  • Works best with continuous hourly+ data
  • Less effective in choppy, low-volume sessions

Tips & Best Practices

💡 Use as Primary Filter

Treat VWAP as your #1 directional filter for intraday trading. Only enter trades that align with the VWAP direction (bullish above, bearish below). This removes trades against institutional flow.

📊 Combine with Support/Resistance

The strongest levels are where VWAP aligns with technical support/resistance. When price is pinned to VWAP at a previous support, expect a strong bounce.

⚡ Watch VWAP Slope

Rising VWAP = accumulation (bullish). Falling VWAP = distribution (bearish). Flat VWAP = consolidation. Use the slope as a momentum confirmation tool alongside price action.

⚠️ Account for Gap Openings

After gap openings, VWAP will be skewed until volume from later bars brings it back toward price. Give VWAP 30-60 minutes to establish reliable levels after market open.

Example Strategy: VWAP Bounce

A practical intraday strategy using VWAP as support/resistance:

VWAP Uptrend Long

Trend Setup

  • ✓ Price above VWAP (bullish context)
  • ✓ VWAP sloping upward (institutional buying)
  • ✓ Multiple touches off VWAP showing support

Entry Setup

  • → Price pulls back toward VWAP (not breaking it)
  • → Confluence: VWAP + 15-min trendline + previous swing low
  • → Enter on reversal candle bouncing from VWAP

Stop Loss

  • 1 ATR below entry, or
  • Below the day's VWAP low by 1 penny

Profit Target

  • 1st target: 1:1 risk-to-reward ratio
  • 2nd target: Previous intraday resistance
  • Trail stop: Below 5-bar EMA as trend continues

Bollinger Bands

Similar concept to VWAP bands - price above middle band is bullish, below is bearish.

Moving Average

Standard SMA or EMA can be used similarly, but VWAP is superior for intraday use.

Volume Profile

Shows where most volume occurred - often aligns with VWAP turning points.

Anchored VWAP

VWAP calculated from a specific anchor point instead of market open.
